Once Bitten Twice Spry

Only about 5 years ago I began to overcome anxiety. I was afraid of speaking to groups as well as one on one to authority figures. I overcame this fear through the practice of relaxation and through growing wiser.

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Phobia, Shmobia.”

Therapy also has its place in overcoming anxiety. When I sought it out, I was a nervous wreck. After some sessions, I was worse! It was the agony for the ecstasy though. When I had overcome my anxiety, everything felt clean and new. I can’t express how important the practice of relaxation is to beating anxiety. Your body begins to respond to repeated stimuli with relaxation. It took me 1-2 years but it really works. I recommend the book “The Relaxation Response.” There’s a lot more I have to share on this important topic. Feel free to stoke the coals in the comments.

    1. Usually it didn’t show. Teaching 4th graders has always been natural. If a supervisor evaluated me, which happens a lot in the early years of teaching, I’d go to pieces but usually didn’t let it show. I’ve come a long way from those days. I think a lot of teachers have the same fears but you’d never know it. For me it’s been a confidence building process rooted in daily relaxation. I recommend it to new teachers I talk with. The groups I am referring to are groups of my peers. Teachers can be very judgmental and they will let you know. I feel like I had to find my way above that. I hope that explains my post a little more. A career in education is no cake walk.

      1. I was a teacher so you are preaching to the choir! Ha. I didn’t have this anxiety, however, luckily. Very early on I started talking and performing before people so it is no problem for me if I don’t have to memorize! My big fear is having to memorize lines and forgetting them. I just don’t put myself in a position where I have to do that. Ad libbing while teaching was no problem. If I’d had to follow any script more detailed that lesson plans , that would have been a problem!!

  1. Ah, a fellow teacher ๐Ÿ™‚ Cool. The prompt was to pick a phobia I’d overcome so I just picked something I struggled with that I got over. I’m sure anyone I’ve worked with through the years would be shocked that I’m sharing this ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m a trainer of trainers and some would probably call me a leader I would think. Ironically, I’m better at ad libbing! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Thanks so much!!!
